Overtime is not the same in every province. Enter your hourly wage and hours to estimate regular pay, overtime pay, and the after-tax value of that overtime using the same payroll engine as the paycheck calculator.

Standard rule here: overtime after 44 hours/week at 1.5× .

Hours are for one pay period. Tax is estimated by repeating that period for a full year.

After-tax overtime is the difference between two full-year payroll estimates: $81,120.00 with this overtime repeating every period (52 periods) versus $62,400.00 without it. It is not overtime pay multiplied by an assumed tax rate.

Results are estimates for a full-year employee claiming the basic personal amount. They are not a pay stub, tax advice, or an official CRA or Revenu Québec calculation. Employer withholding on a single cheque can differ from this annual estimate.

How overtime is calculated here

Regular hours are paid at your hourly wage. Overtime hours use that jurisdiction’s standard premium — usually 1.5×, and 2× after 12 hours in a day in British Columbia. New Brunswick’s statutory floor is 1.5× the minimum wage, not automatically 1.5× your regular rate.

How after-tax overtime is estimated

The calculator assumes the same hours repeat every pay period for a full year, then compares take-home pay with and without the overtime. That difference is the estimated after-tax value. It is not overtime pay multiplied by a guessed tax rate.

What this does not cover

Managers, some professions, averaging agreements, collective agreements, and federally regulated workplaces can follow different rules. This tool models the standard employment-standards default, not every exemption.

Example after-tax overtime

At $30/hour with 40 regular hours and 8 overtime hours every week , this estimate annualizes $81,120.00 and compares it with $62,400.00 without the overtime. The overtime premium is $360.00 gross per week; the estimated after-tax value of that overtime is $234.15 per week.

Frequently asked questions

How much do I keep after tax?

In the $30/hour example with 8 overtime hours, estimated after-tax overtime is $234.15 per week using 2026 payroll rules.

Is overtime taxed differently?

No. Overtime is employment income. Extra hours can increase income tax and remaining CPP/QPP or EI, so the amount you keep is less than the gross overtime premium.

Are there overtime exemptions?

Many jobs are exempt or have a higher threshold under ESA Regulation 285/01. Hours can be averaged over up to four weeks if there is a written agreement. This calculator models the standard employment-standards default, not every exemption.

How much of my overtime do I actually keep?

This calculator estimates that by comparing annual take-home pay with and without the overtime hours. The gap is the after-tax value, after income tax and payroll contributions.

Does every Canadian province use a 40-hour overtime week?

No. Ontario and New Brunswick generally use 44 hours. Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island generally use 48. Several jurisdictions also have daily thresholds.

Is this legal advice?

No. Employment-standards rules have exemptions. Use the official source linked on the page, or an employment-standards office, for your situation.
